Syllabus

Course Objective:

The objective of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the methods and techniques of developing a simple to moderately complex web site. Using the standard web page language XHTML, students will be instructed on creating and maintaining a simple web site. After the foundation language of XHTML as well as some dynamic XHTML has been established, the aid of an Internet editor, specifically Dreamweaver, will be introduced. To further enhance the web sites a second language, Java Script, will be included. Finally, web site design & layout techniques as well as basic search engine analysis will be added to enhance the students practical design skills.

Prerequisites: CS110 or CS 131 or permission of the instructor.

The course will be divided into 4 primary topics.

XHTML with some dynamic XHTML concepts as well.
Web site maintenance with Dreamweaver
Java Script
Web site layout and design techniques & Internet search engine analysis.

You will also need a Pitt Network account.

GRADING:

20% mid term
30% Final
20% Labs/Class work
5-10% Quiz
25-20% Homework and Final Project

Late Policy: Unless stated otherwise, all assignments are due at the beginning of class. For each day that an assignment is late 10% of the total possible points will be deducted from the grade.

Extensions: Extension will only be granted before an assignment is due and only under extraordinary circumstances.

Quizzes: There will be one or two announced quizzes. The date of the quizzes will be given in class and posted to the class web site at least one week ahead of time.

Exams: There is a midterm and a final exam scheduled for this class. Both exams will be in-class, half written and half application. No makeup exams will be offered unless you have a documented medical excuse.

Lab grading: Labs will be worth 2 points for each completed. While some labs may be challenging, most will be very basic and an easy way to pick up points. There will be NO makeup labs!

• CELL PHONES! PLEASE DO NOT HAVE YOUR CELL PHONE RINGER ON. CELL PHONES DO HAVE A VIBRATE MODE THAT WILL QUIETLY ALERT YOU OF AN INCOMING CALL WITHOUT DISTURBING YOUR FELLOW CLASSMATES. IF YOU NEED TO ANSWER A CALL DO NOT ANSWER IT IN THE CLASSROOM. PLEASE GO OUT INTO THE HALL TO ANSWER YOUR CALLS!!!
• You should check the class web site (http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~chang/134) regularly for announcements regarding class and assignments.
• There will be one point deduction for each class you fail to attend unless you inform the instructor in advance and provide proof for reason of non-attendance such as illness. If you are absent from a lecture, you are responsible for learning what was covered, and obtaining any notes or handouts given in class. All class handouts are available on the class website unless stated otherwise.
• It is usually better to e-mail me rather than call because I am always around a computer but not always my phone.
