March 8th Colloquium: Database Design Theory and Normalization -- Sara Riazi

Talk Abstract: Normalization is a process to verify the correctness of relational schema and provides formal guidelines on improving the schema in order to reduce data redundancy -- which causes anomalies in database systems. Normalization defines different normal forms based on the source of data redundancy in the relations. In this lecture, I, first, introduce the functional dependencies, which describe the relationship between attributes in the relational schema. Examining the properties of functional dependencies of the schema informs us about the normal forms of the relations. Finally, I discuss methods for refining the relations into higher normal forms to reduce undesirable data redundancy.

Biosketch: Dr. Riazi is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Prior to joining UNCC, she was an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of New Haven. She got her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon under the supervision of Prof. Boyana Norris with a dissertation on “Distributed Memory Processing of Very Large Graphs”. Dr. Riazi's research has been focused on big data processing and data mining.
