Dr. Adriana Kovashka’s NSF CAREER project aims to lower the cost of AI learning
Dr. Adriana Kovashka received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award in May 2021. Dr. Kovashka teaches deep learning at the undergraduate level, and several graduate courses, including computer vision, both of which involve forms of machine learning. The project for which she was awarded the CAREER grant, focuses on object detection in images.

In conjunction with undergraduate students Chloe Ciora and Nur Iren, Dr. Malihe Alikhani (Assistant Professor, CS) was awarded the best paper award at the 14th International Conference on Natural Language Generation.

Pitt CS graduate student Mingda Zhang, assistant professor Adriana Kovashka, and professor Rebecca Hwa received the best paper award at the Efficient Deep Learning for Computer Vision CVPR Workshop (ECV 2021) for their work in collaboration with Drs. Chun-Te Chu, Andrey Zhmoginov, Andrew Howard, Brendan Jou, Yukun Zhu, and Li Zhang, from Google Research

New machine learning methods could improve environmental predictions
Dr. Xiaowei Jia is leading a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota, the University of Pittsburgh, and the U.S. Geological Survey in developing a new machine-learning method that will provide more accurate stream and river temperature predictions, even when little data is available.

Chrysanthis received the Best Industry and Application Paper Award at the 22nd IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM 2021) for their paper entitled "A Context, Location and Preference-Aware System for Safe Pedestrian Mobility".
