Part of the charm of Pittsburgh's urban environment is the multitude of chances we have to get the heck out of it. There are plenty of trails to take a walk, run, bike ride or rollerblade. Some offer a green escape from city life, while some offer views and ways to get around the city itself. Don't let the summer go by without taking advantage of some of the coolest spots in the area.

Eliza Furnace Trail
Runs between the Parkway East and Second Avenue, Downtown to Greenfield

Most useful for lunchtime strolls and commuting.

North Park Bike/Jog Trail
Off McKnight Road, North Hills

A five-mile loop around North Park Lake. There are plenty of spots to park, but your best bet is at the Boat House on Pierce Mill Road South.

North Shore section of Three Rivers Heritage Trails
Runs from the West End Bridge to Millvale.

Provides access to the ball parks of the North Shore and Kayak Pittsburgh, to continue the adventure.

South Side section of Three Rivers Heritage Trails

Park north off East Carson Street onto 11th Street and cross the railroad tracks

Point State Park
Downtown

This central location at The Point connects to the North Shore, South side and Eliza Furnace trails. Park Downtown. Good luck.

Riverview Park Loop Trail
Off Perrysville Avenue, Observatory Hill

A moderate trail in the woodsy Riverview Park, home to a log cabin and the Allegheny Observatory.

Steel Valley Trail
Homestead, passes through several communities

A well-maintained trail that's illuminated after dark. It runs along the southern shore of the Mon. Park at one of the zillions of spots at The Waterfront.
