Police said they received a call about shots being fired at 4:01 a.m. yesterday in the 2800 block of Centre Avenue. When they arrived, officers saw the tail lights of a wrecked vehicle about 30 feet into a wooded area. The vehicle was running and Mr. Howze was lying on the front seat, with multiple gunshot wounds. The vehicle was a gray Chevrolet Monte Carlo with out-of-state plates. Police said they believe the shooting took place on the street in front of 2819 Centre Ave. and that Mr. Howze tried to drive away. Cmdr. Maurita Bryant said that police do not know whether Mr. Howze was alone in the car and whether the shots came from inside the vehicle or from the street or another vehicle. Neighbors heard the shots but said they did not see anything. "We are trying to find out why he was at the location at that time," she said. "We are hoping to speak to some of his friends to determine whether or not he had a problem with someone. Oftentimes family members will not have some of those details." Mr. Udin, speaking in the doorway of his home last night, asked for privacy. "Give us time to grieve. When I have something to say, I will say it." Gus Cantanese, Mr. Howze's former head football coach at Perry Traditional Academy, said he was stunned to hear the news that his former wide receiver and defensive back had been killed. "He was a decent student as far as I can remember, and he never missed practice," Mr. Cantanese said. "My heart goes out to his family." Mr. Cantanese said he remembered Mr. Howze talking about wanting to attend a community college for a couple of years then trying to get into a four-year school. Mr. Udin's legal name is Samuel Wesley Howze, but he has used the name Sala Udin for more than a decade. He ran seeking a third four-year council term representing the Hill District but lost in the May primary to Tonya Payne, his former aide. Mr. Udin also was an actor who worked with the late playwright August Wilson, who was buried here Saturday. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Howze were incomplete last night. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ /(Nate Guidry can be reached at nguidry@post-gazette.com or 412-263-3865.)/ Paid advertising E-mail this story E-mail this story Print this story Printer-friendly page Pittsburgh Zoo Search | Contact Us | Site Map | Terms of Use | Privacy Policy | Advertise | About Us | Help | Corrections Copyright ©1997-2005 PG Publishing Co., Inc.
