Riverfront Park funding grows

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The proposed South Shore Riverfront Park along the Monongahela River adjacent to the SouthSide Works development took another step forward yesterday when U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum delivered a check for $300,000 in federal funds to Pittsburgh's Urban Redevelopment Authority.

With yesterday's contribution, the URA and the Soffer Organization, which is developing SouthSide Works, have raised $750,000 in the past month for the project, which is expected to cost about $7.5 million and will be part of a 10-mile loop of riverfront parks and trails around the Downtown area known as Three Rivers Park.

After a series of neighborhood meetings in the past month, the developer is beginning preliminary designs for the park.

It is expected to have a boat dock and an amphitheater, among other elements.
