CS 0401 Course Announcements
December 5, 2011
  • If you cannot make the Final Exam as scheduled (see previous announcement) for a legitimate reason (conflict, 3 finals on Monday) you may take it on one of the two alternative days / times below:

    Friday, December 9, 2011 from 1PM-2:50PM in 6143 SENSQ

    Tuesday, December 13, 2011 from 10AM-11:50AM in 6143 SENSQ

Note 1: Please let me know via email which session you will be attending, so I can have enough exams ready for you.
Note 2: I have a class Friday, December 9 from 1-2:50, so I will not be available during that time. Thus, if you opt to take it then, I will not be around to answer any questions you may have. A staff member will be there to collect the exams when you are finished.
Note 3: 6143 SENSQ is a small conference room immediately to the right as you face my office.
  • November 22, 2011
  • My office hours for Wednesday, November 23 will be 10AM-12PM. Please note this in case you need to see me before Thanksgiving break.
  • November 18, 2011 Two reminders:
  • Due to the short week, labs will be canceled the week of November 21-25 (Thanksgiving Week).
  • The late penalty for Assignment 4 is waived. Therefore, if you submit by the late due date you can still receive full credit.
  • November 9, 2011 Some announcements:
  • Quiz 2 will be given during labs next week (November 14, 15, 16 and 17). There will be a regular, ungraded lab followed by the quiz. The material will be from Lecture 15 up to and including Lecture 21. See the online syllabus for details and prepare accordingly.
  • Exam 2 will be a Departmental Exam. Note the date, time and location below:
Monday, December 12, 8:00AM-9:50AM in 343 Alumni Hall

More details about Exam 2 (ex: study information) will be posted when it gets closer.
  • Due to the short week, labs will be canceled the week of November 21-25 (Thanksgiving Week).
  • October 29, 2011
  • I have put the Assignment 3 Grading Rubric online. Look over this carefully to see how much each part of the assignment is worth. Note that there are 200 raw points for the assignment, but the assignment is worth (as usual) 100 points overall. This means that the raw points will be divided by 2 to get the final points. Keep this in mind when determining how much something is worth. In particular, the late penalty of 15 percent would be equivalent to 30 raw points.
  • October 15, 2011
  • I have put the solutions to quiz 1 online. Look these over to help in your studying for Exam One.
  • October 13, 2011
  • I have modfified the materials for Exam One slightly. Since we did not get to two-dimensional arrays in lecture, you will not be responsible for them on the exam.
  • October 11, 2011 Some important announcements / reminders:
  • Exam One will be given during lecture on Tuesday, October 18. Plan accordingly! I have put some study materials online to help you with the exam. See Online Materials for a review sheet and some practice questions. I will be putting the solutions to Quiz 1 online later this week.
  • Assignment 2 is due on-time this Friday, October 14 by 11:59PM. I have activated the submission site for Assignment 2 and I have put the grading rubric online. I strongly recommend submitting on-time (if possible) so that you can focus on the exam over the weekend.
  • Lab 6 is now online and it is a graded lab. I had previously told some of you that it would not be graded, but decided that making it graded was the best option (since we need 3 more graded labs before the end of the term). Note that you can demo it for grading in the beginning of Lab 7 if you do not finish it during Lab 6. Also note that, due to the canceled labs this week, the Monday lab will be the first ones to do Lab 6 (rather than the last, as was the case for Labs 1-5).
  • October 4, 2011
  • Due to a meeting, my office hours for Wednesday, October 5 will be 2:00PM-3:00PM in my office. If you need to see me and cannot make that time, please let me know and we can schedule an appointment.
  • September 29, 2011
  • To help you prepare for the quiz during Lab 5, see this quiz help sheet. See the lab schedule for details on when your quiz will be given.
  • September 28, 2011
  • WiCS (Women in Computer Science) is hosting a chat session with Microsoft today (Wednesday, September 28) at 5PM in 6329 SENSQ. Stop by if you want to find out what Microsoft has to offer for CS students.
  • If you need some extra help with your programs and cannot make office hours (for either me or your TAs) you may want to try the CS Help Desk, in SENSQ 5710. This room is staffed by advanced CS majors who can help you with concepts / debugging / etc for your assignments. Note that you should come in prepared with specific questions / problems and you should not expect them to do any actual coding for you. However, they can be invaluable in helping you to get rid of that nagging compilation or run-time error. For Help Desk hours, see:

  • September 27, 2011
  • If you are interested in Bioinformatics you should come to an iinformation session on Friday, September 30, at 11:45AM in 5317 SENSQ. Pizza will be served! For more information see: this link

The quiz will be given in the second half of the lab, after you have had a chance to do the regular lab exercise (which will not be a graded exercise). More information on the quiz will be posted soon.
  • September 14, 2011
  • As requested, I have put the grading rubric for Assignment 1 online. Use the point values for individual requirements to help guide you when doing the assignment. This can be especially useful if you are considering a late submission.
  • August 31, 2011
