Mission Statement

Heterogeneity

structural, semantic, type, capabilities

Volatility

Ignorance of Resources

Provenance of Data

Anything you can do with a single database, you now want to do in this new environment, and much more!

Research Foci*

Efficient query processing, languages & middleware.

Extracting structure, querying structure & content, relationship between structured,  semi-structured and unstructured data.

Resource Discovery.

Data Quality.  represent quality and provenance of derived data, measures of data relevance.

Information Flow.  Represent & propagate changes to content & structure.   Update coherence.  Archival data.

Privacy & confidentiality.

Important connections with languages and models, information presentation.

* Make the whole shebang usable by non-computer scientists!

Applications and Testbeds

The testbeds exist!

Scientific (biology, ecology, earth sciences, linguistics) and cross-scientific.

Public/government (patent, census, public documents, budget...).

Financial/news.

Maintain these & encourage others!

Vision -- integration should be as easy as using a spreadsheet....

Basic research still needed!
