What the Meeting is About

Modern information networks are a source of fundamental problems that ask for new algorithmic solutions and paradigms.  These range from resource allocation and management in wired, wireless and mobile networks, network design, distributed protocols for operating communication networks coping with non-cooperative entities, migration of distributed computation at the Internet scale and domain. Processing and mining massive data sets also pose new algorithmic challenges: Information retrieval on the web, mining massive data streams, property testing and the extension of classical algorithmic technique to systems with hierarchical memories to mention few of them.

The intention of this workshop  is to foster interaction among leading researchers and to disseminate ideas about new research directions.

Important Dates

FOCS 2004 is in Rome and runs from Sunday October 17 to Tuesday October 19.

Arrival: The evening of Tuesday October  19, 2004
Departure:  The morning of Saturday October 23, 2004

Location

The meeting will be held in the small picturesque medieval hilltop town of Bertinoro. This town is in Emilia Romagna about 50km east of Bologna at an elevation of about 230m.  Here is an aerial view of Bertinoro and here is map putting it in context.

The meeting will be held in a redoubtable ex-Episcopal fortress that occupies the central peak of Bertinoro. The  fortress that has been converted by the University of Bologna into a modern conference center with computing facilities and Internet access. Winding around this central peak are many narrow streets and walkways. On tne the edge of the peak are many nice cafes and restaurants with an amazing view  that stretches from the Tuscan Apennines to the Adriatic coast.

General Information on How to Reach Bertinoro

To reach Bertinoro after FOCS we suggest taking the train. The town of Forli can be reach by train from Rome via Bologna in 3.5 to 4 hours depending on the connection in Bologna. There is a train leaving Rome for Bologna about once per hour, and there is at least one train per hour from Bologna to Forli. Bertinoro is a 15 minute (20-30 Euro) taxi ride from the Forli train station.
