Radar Watch Broken?
Monday, February 27, 2006, 09:26 PM - General
It seems the NWS has changed the source of their images to download and RadarWatch might not be working for the last week. Anyone else notice this?

(P.S. I'm not dead, just busy.)

Some updates
Monday, January 30, 2006, 12:56 PM - Announcements
vBar 2.2 is out with my fixes:
-support for the default WM5 theme
-Tap-and-hold to close, tap to minimize option
-fixes squished menu in WM5
-battery meter looks like a battery

Download it from http://www.vieka.com/vbar.htm

----

I am sorry for the total lack of updates in a while. Life has gotten busy^2 this month. I hope next month I can make progress on something.

Things still on my agenda (but on the backburner):
-Keep trying to fix the keyboard problem for SearchToday
-do the VGA update for GSPlayer 2.24
-Release a beta version of my AstronToday plugin

Thanks for your patience, I just need to take a break before I can get to all this.

Two reminders
Monday, January 16, 2006, 03:21 PM - General
Many people are being linked straight to these blog entries, but I have created a variety of other software applications that can be found at http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~jmisurda/ppc/

By bypassing that page, you also miss my suggestion:

If you appreciate these programs and would like to send a donation, I'd suggest sending it to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. You can donate online here: https://www.cff.org/ways_to_give/DonationForm/

Thanks.

SearchToday Beta tester request
Sunday, January 15, 2006, 11:04 PM - Announcements
I'm going to be picking up working on SearchToday some more soon, and as I've discovered from all your wonderful feedback is that I need to have access to many more devices than just my x50v.

I'm now accepting applications for about a dozen Beta testers. What I'd like is to have a variety of people, especially those who have encountered a problem with the existing version (i.e. people with non-English devices and devices with a built-in keyboard.)

The only requirements are: you have a pocketpc, you are willing to hard-reset in the unfortunate event it doesn't work for some reason, and you can respond fairly quickly when test builds go out.

If you'd like to apply, send me a message through the "contact" link on the right side with your device type, what problem you're experiencing, and an email address to reach you by.

Traffic spike
Sunday, January 8, 2006, 01:01 PM - General
Wow, I've gotten linked from somewhere particularly popular. But I don't know where. I'm always interested in where people hear about my programs, so feel free to leave a note stating where you were linked from.

I'm on a bit of a break at the moment while I try to get my new semester rolling. I'm definitely reading what you guys post, but give me some time before I respond or before you see your suggestions implemented.

Some general notes:

* I hate themed/skinned applications. However if you have artistic talent and would like to contribute an icon or something, send me an email through the contact link on the right and we can talk.

* That being said, notice that the colors of the text and the textbox on SearchToday are customizable through the menu. Set it to whatever works best for you and your today theme.

So welcome everyone, and try out some of my other applications!

GSPlayer VGA
Saturday, December 31, 2005, 08:33 PM - Announcements
I see GSPlayer 2.23 is up with a new WM5 version. I've downloaded the source and made all the VGA changes I believe. I'm doing a few days of internal testing, then I will unleash it upon the New Year.

The woes of software registration
Tuesday, December 27, 2005, 10:34 PM - Rants
I'm sometimes asked why I don't sell my software. The number one reason is lack of time to do proper support. My schooling and teaching come first.

A second reason is software registration. The reality for software developer is that if you release a shareware program, it will be cracked. Warez is even making tremendous inroads into mobile applications. Coming up with a way to prevent it is impossible, and the harder you try, the less user-friendly it becomes.

I purchased a game last night from Handango, and the registration process left quite a bit to be desired. It ended up with an email to their support. The reply was prompt and courteous, but the whole experience left me with a bitter taste. Somewhat like DRM, software registration makes me feel like a criminal.

So for now, you guys want free software, you've got it.

WM5 and *.unload files
Thursday, December 22, 2005, 09:25 PM - General
I was looking into how to display the list of installed programs, and I noticed that in WM5 there are no .unload files in the \windows directory. It seems that they have been replaced with xml files in subdirectories under \windows\appmgr

Anyone confirm this or explain the difference?
