I believe I've fixed whatever was causing the hangs on reboot on WM2003 devices. With that in mind, I'm releasing a new version with a few more features:- Hitting enter in the text field now causes it to search
- The default system web browser is now used. You can change this is the settings dialog
- The settings dialog is now accessable from the globe menu
- The globe menu has 3 types of searches enabled that you can choose from:
- Search - this sends the text in the textbox to the search engine you have configured
- http://%s - this allows you to type a url in the box and have it be launched
- http://www.%s.com - this allows you to type just the main word of the address in the textbar, sort of like hitting CTRL+ENTER allows you to do on the desktop
- Hopefully your settings will be saved now in all cases
I will continue to add a few more features, mainly where you can customize the menu to hold various different search engines to select from.
Thank you for all your patience. Remember to deselect SearchToday in Settings->Today->Items before installing.

Two observations about coding examples and information on the web:1.) Never trust it
2.) Even (especially?) if it's from Microsoft.

I've uploaded a new test version that fixes a tiny problem SearchToday had in the code, and makes the installer set some more registry entries.I have tested this on the ARM emulator and found it to not hang (i got it to hang once in a while before, but its hard to know if that was from using the emulator, or if it was my code.)
For those still interested in testing with WM2003:

Remember to make a backup prior to use. If this doesn't work, I'll take some people on as beta testers who don't mind doing this kind of thing.
Thanks for your patience.

I've uploaded a new testing build to try to eliminate the lockups on WM2003SE. So far all I know is that an x50v with WM2003SE has problems, while an x50v with WM5 doesn't seem to.This new testing release disables two features I added in the new version: resizing on orientation change, and loading preferences. It will now use the default colors and search engine while loading. I want to see if loading from the registry is happening too early.
If you're still willing to try download:

I'm hearing that the new version of SearchToday is causing lockups on reboot that require a hard reset. I have not seen this in WM5 although boots are so slow it feels locked up.If you can find a copy of safe mode for the pocket pc you can install that if there are problems on a WM2003(SE) device to prevent needing a hard reset possibly. The website was down when I checked.
I will look into the problem, but its hard for me to debug when I can't reproduce it.
I apologize sincerely for any hardships this has caused.

I have uploaded a new version of SearchToday. This version supports:- New popup menu when you click the globe to clear the edit box, and activate and deactivate the SIP (hopefully)
- A new options dialog that is accessible from the control panel. This allows you to change the preferences of:
- Browser used. Enter the full path to the browser (File selection dialog coming in next version.)
- Search url used. Details below
- Background color - select your favorite color if the default guess isn't good
- Text color - choose whatever color text you would like, or let the default be picked up from your theme
Notes on using a custom search URL
You may enter any url here, and where you include the %s sequence will be replaced with whatever text you have typed into the textbox.
Examples:
Google Canada: http://www.google.ca/pda?q=%s
Yahoo Search: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%s
You can also launch urls from the box directly if you were to do:
%s
Then you could type in any url from the today screen and launch your browser.
To Install (READ FIRST)
To avoid problems uninstalling please follow this procedure:
- Go to Settings->Today->Items and uncheck SearchToday
- Go to the Today Screen and make sure it has disappeared (IMPORTANT!)
- Uninstall the existing version (optional)
- Install the new CAB
If you don't do this, it may not work. An installer will be included in the next version. To make sure it worked, tap the globe icon. If you get a menu, it worked. If you don't, retry the following steps, inserting a soft reset before the new install.
Download is from the same url:

Thanks for the kind words, and let me know of any new issues!

I was enamored with one of the Today Screen plugins on the new WM Treo, of which you can see a screenshot here:http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.p ... ilable.htm
The plugin allows you to search the web from the today screen. This seemed useful, and I wonder why no one ever thought of it before. I've often debated which to leave my homepage on in PIE, yahoo for me to check my mail and the like, or google, to do quick info lookups. Yahoo has won, but now I could have the best of both worlds.
I decided to try to write a clone of such a plugin, and here's my result:
This is a 1.0/beta version that I'd like people to help me test out. It's not configurable, it will only search google. There are some issues with the Keyboard popping/not popping/not disappearing that I need to work on, and there may be some version and theme problems.
Basically, I'd like to hear from you if it works. I'm not sure if it will work on devices that use anything earlier than WM2003SE. If that's the case, I'll work on fixing that.
You can install it via cab here: http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~jmisurda/ppc/Se ... ay.ARM.CAB
Download/Copy it to your device, install, and enable it from the Today settings applet. There will be an improved installer in the future as well. To uninstall, you'll first have to uncheck it from the today settings applet, then uninstall.
Let me know how it works, and give some suggestions for future versions.
Thanks,
Jon
