Overview

I am a part-time Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh. I entered the program during the Fall 2005 semester and based on my current rate of progress, I plan to graduate around 2012 (hopefully sooner). I currently work as a Senior Software Engineer at IBM in the Software Services for WebSphere team under the Software Group organization. I moved to Pittsburgh in June 1999 after graduating from Purdue University where I did my undergraduate studies in Industrial Engineering with a concentration in Human Factors. After I moved to Pittsburgh, I went on to get a M.S. in Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and then a M.S. in Information Technology - Software Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University both of them as a part-time student. I am originally from Lima, Peru and my first language is Spanish.

Education Progress

The following are the courses I have taken at the University of Pittsburgh towards my degree.

Research Interest

I do not have a specific area of interest yet, however, some areas that I find interesting are Distributed Systems, Collaborative Systems and Autonomous Systems. And yes, I am very biased towards Systems research. I have tried to look at research from a perspective other than Systems but I have not find it very intersting yet.. I assume that this will change as I progress in my degree and as I narrow my areas of interest.

Research Projects

This is a list of research projects in which I have been able to contribute.

  • IC Card Editor. The purpose of this project is to build a database driven Web application that allows users to create IC Card definitions. This application is a tool used for the C-Pumkin project of Prof. Chang that aims for Rapid Prototyping of Time-Critical Applications.
  • SIS Management Console. This application is a specification editor that enables users to create messages for input to the Slow Intelligence System Testbed.
  • Grid computing. I am looking into doing research in Grid computing with a Software Engineering focus. I would attempt to document the resources I find on my All-in-One page about Grid computing.

    Teaching

  • CS1520. Programming Languages for Web Applications. I am the TA for the Summer 2011 semester.

    Associations

  • -- Professional
  • Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers - Western Pennsylvania Professional Chapter. Lifetime membership. This is a great organization for promoting the sciences and maths in the Latino population. It is also a great networking tool for students. Graduate students can join either a Professional or a Student chapter.. for information look here SHPE
  • -- Social
  • Latin American Cultural Union. On-off member. The mission is to promote the Latino culture in the Western Pennsylvania area.
  • Pittsburgh Young Professionals. On-off member. The mission is to provide career-minded individuals with opportunities to develop socially, professionally and civically. If you are planning on staying in Pittsburgh for work, I would recommed you to join this organization to network with other young professionals in the area, specially if you are not a native of Pittsburgh.
  • Alpha Tau Omega. Undergraduate Social Fraternity. I was a member of the Gamma Omicron chapter.
