I am a PhD student in the Intelligent
Systems Program (ISP) at University of Pittsburgh. ISP is
a multidisciplinary program for studies related to
artificial intelligence and covers a diverse set of research groups (ranging from computational linguistics to medical informatics).
As a PhD student, I am studying Natural Language
Processing (NLP) which is the science of designing and
developing intelligent systems which are capable of
understanding and analyzing human language
communications. More specifically I am interested to
learn about the automation of language translation
for middle eastern languages such as Arabic and Farsi (my
native language). In my work, I employ statistical learning techniques to model the mappings between the two languages.
My interest in NLP stems from my college years in Carnegie
Mellon and also my 10 months internship at Justsystem
Pittsburgh research lab where I worked with Dr. Vibhu
Mittal and Mark Kantrovitz on effects of word stemming
on Information Retrieval. Also before
starting the PhD program at University of
Pittsburgh, I worked on automation of
semantic role labeling with Dr.
Srini Narayanan in the FrameNet
project at UC Berkeley.
In Summer 2005, I carried out a research internship at Information Sciences Institute (ISI) in Marina Del Rey, CA and worked in the Machine Translation group with Dr. Kevin Knight and Dr. Daniel Marcu.
Currently I am working with my advisor Dr.
Rebecca Hwa on Statistical Machine Translation.
