THE PESTILENCE CALLED WAR

(ROBERT TO HIS WIFE --WWI):
A German falls a hundred yards from me, his head smashed by a
bullet. He had no time to defend himself. One enemy less, BUT HOW MANY
TEARS WILL FLOW tomorrow perhaps, HOW MANY HEARTS WILL BE BROKEN,
because a loved one is no more! .. I must love my country,
but it is NO REASON FOR HATING OTHERS and dreaming of nothing but
slaughter... Faced with such physical suffering, one forgets the
facile hatreds of war, and it is brought home how much we are all one,
ONLY TOO MORTAL FLESH!
Captain Robert Dubarle, killed 15 June 1915 (WWI)
