Abstract

Latest advances in the miniaturization of devices, new display technologies, new communication paradigms, etc. are augmenting the possibilities of implementing the vision that Mark Weiser formulated in the 1990s of a world full of invisible embedded devices that act in the background to make our life easier. Starting with his visionary ideas and almost two decades of research later, we have reached a point where technologies such as sensor networks, embedded systems and pervasive systems are ready to converge.

In my talk, I will give an overview of this convergent area of research from the point of view of CONET, the Cooperating Objects Network of Excellence that started in June 2008 and I have the pleasure to coordinate. Then I will discuss some of the scientific achievements of my group and put them in the perspective of the 10-15 year roadmap that CONET is developing. These achievements involve, for example, new routing algorithms for sensor networks, efficient deployment mechanisms, role-based configuration of pervasive systems and border recognition protocols.

Biography of Speaker

Dr. Pedro José Marrón is a professor at the Institute for Computer Science at the University of Bohn, Germany, where he is heading the Sensor Networks and Pervasive Computing work group. The main research field of the Sensor Networks and Pervasive Computing group is the research area of Cooperating Objects. Cooperating Objects is a term that has been coined initially by the Embedded WiSeNts Coordination Action in FP6.
