About the Talk and speaker
Bill Tomer is a 22 year veteran in software engineering and engineering management in a variety of domains. He is the Vice President of Engineering at Cepstral, a company that makes Speech Synthesis software. He has a degree in Mathematics from Allegheny College (1983) and a MS from University of Pittsburgh in Computer Science (1992).
It is not just not a typical, but instead very common, for new hires to get thrown to the wolves on a large and unfamiliar code base. The code bases are for products that are profitable and must be extended and “fixed” to remain profitable for the company. The new hire must find a way to fix defects, add features and all in a way that makes things better for themselves (or the next guy/girl) in the future.
This talk will discuss the strategies and mind set around taking this task on.
