Evaluations of Teaching

What were the instructor's major weaknesses?
"Likes St. Louis Blues"
- from a student evaluation, summer 2001

I have taught programming courses at both the University of Wisconsin-Madison (from 1995 to 1997) and the University of Pittsburgh (from 1997 to the present).  At both universities, students are given a chance to evaluate instructors.  Because the universities each used their own questions, the results are split up into a group from each school.  This table shows my average student ratings on overall performance (5 being the best) during my time at both universities with the average rankings:

University Overall Rating
Average
UW-Madison (2 yrs)
4.69
4.09
Pittsburgh (4 yrs)
4.45
3.87

There is much more to this story - the evaluations included a variety of questions that speak to different aspects of my teaching (such as enthusiasm and responsiveness).  If you would like to see a complete presentation of these results, please see these pages:
Data from UW-Madison is kept on file in the Computer Sciences Department by Cathy Richard (as of December 2003) and data from Pittsburgh is kept by the Office of Evaluation and Measurement.  They are willing to confirm the results you see below.
